David Beckham is out of the World Cup after tearing his left Archilles tendon in AC Milan’s match against Chievo at the weekend.
The injury happened without any contact from another player, Beckham was seen limping off the field to get treatment. What a devastating blow for him as was his last chance to play in a World Cup. England’s manager Fabio Capello has phoned him to offer his support.
Milan’s coach said after the game that everyone felt terrible about Becks’ injury.
Australia won the toss for the fifth time running in today’s one-day international in Wellington and captain Ricky Ponting invited New Zealand to bat.
Paceman Clint McKay plays his first game of the series while Ryan Harris is rested, and uncapped Tasmanian skipper George Bailey is 12th man.

The Red bull team had a disappointing time at the opening practice ahead of the first F1 race of the season in Bahrain tomorrow.
Drivers Mark Webber from Australia, and Sebastian Vettel from Germany, didn’t manage to achieve consistent track times and competitive performances at the practice.
Webber managed just 12 laps in the afternoon after encountering problems with his car’s gearbox. He was 17th overall.
He said he would be concentrating on qualifying in today’s practice.
Webber said afterwards he could already see how competitive it was going to be this season.
Vettel didn’t think his 35 laps were enough to assess the car’s performance or make any adjustments it might need. He came in 5th fastest of the afternoon.
Australia’s cricket team retains the Chappell Hadlee Trophy after outstanding performances from Cameron White and skipper Ricky Ponting who both hit half-centuries and clinched the series against New Zealand in Auckland.
White was unbeaten on 50 as Australia, chasing 200 to win off 34 overs in a rain-interrupted match, scored 4-202 with 17 balls to spare.
Ponting was on fire with 50 off 35 balls before he was leg-before to spinner Daniel Vettori who took 2-29.
Afterwards, Ponting said he was already looking ahead to the two-Test series against the Black Caps which begins on March 19.
Vice-captain Michael Clarke is expected to return from Sydney back to Wellington in a few days’ time ready to prepare for next week’s first Test.
Ponting said he felt the distracting incidents of the week involving Clarke had really tested his team’s determination.

V8 Supercar racing has announced it will run a new Grand Slam - including four events; this weekend’s Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, the Bathurst 1000, the Gold Coast SuperCarnivale and the final event of the year which was a new event to Sydney last year.
The prize being offered to the driver who can win all four events is a massive $2,000,000.
In reality however, this is a very tough call - for one driver to win the four biggest events of the season.
Current series champion Jamie Whincup appears to stand the best chance having won three events in previous seasons at Adelaide, Bathurst and the Gold Coast.
Whincup said it was a great incentive.
